Tigers Even UConn Series with 4-3 Win
Apr 25, 2015 | Baseball
Storrs, Conn. -- Dylan Toscano logged a six-inning start and Craig Caufield pitched the final three frames to lead Memphis to a 4-3 win over UConn Saturday. The series-deciding game will be Sunday at 11:00 a.m. (CST) at J.O. Christian Field.
The Tigers' senior starting pitcher, Toscano, picked up his seventh win of the season after allowing three runs on five hits in six innings. He struck out five Husky batters in the start.
Caufield, a senior reliever, allowed just one hit in tying his season-long for innings pitched in a game. He recorded his first save of the season. The right-hander struck out the side in order in the eighth inning.
For the fourth straight game Memphis got on the board in the first inning. The Tigers plated two runs on a pair of RBI groundouts. Darien Tubbs and Zach Schritenthal both singled and moved up on a passed ball. The two runs came home on groundouts by Kane Barrow and Tucker Tubbs.
Schritenthal finished 2-for-5 for his third multi-hit game in his last four. The sophomore third baseman has scored at least one run in each of his last six games. Darien Tubbs was 1-for-5 with two runs scored.
UConn scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth, benefiting from a lead-off walk. With two outs Joe Deroche-Duffin singled to left field to drive in the run. Deroche-Duffin has driven in five runs in the series.
The Tigers got two more runs across in the top of the fifth after a lead-off double by Brandon Montgomery. Jake Overbey grounded out to advance Montgomery to third base.
After a chopper by Darien Tubbs, Montgomery appeared to be caught in a run down but the Tigers' second baseman managed to slide back into third base and Darien Tubbs ended up at second on a fielder's choice.
Schritenthal followed with a chopper to the right side that scored Montgomery and the Huskies' second baseman bobbled the ball allowing Darien Tubbs to slide into home safely to make the score 4-1.
UConn immediately got the two runs back in the next half inning. A single to right field by Bobby Melley drove in one run and an errant throw back to the infield allowed the second to score.
Toscano rebounded with a perfect sixth inning to end his day before Caufield slammed the door. The Huskies had just one base runner over the final four innings of the game.
