Memphis, Tenn. -- Darien Tubbs smashed two home runs, including a grand slam, and drove in a season-high seven runs to lead Memphis to an 11-6 win over Belmont Tuesday at FedExPark.
The win clinched the season series, two games to one, for the Tigers over the Bruins. Memphis will next play at Ole Miss Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
The Tigers' center fielder lined an RBI triple and scored a run in the second inning before hitting the grand slam in the third. His second home run of the game was a two-run shot in the seventh inning.
Tubbs finished the game 3-for-5 with seven RBI and three runs scored. The last Memphis player to drive in seven runs in a game was Jacob Wilson against Kennesaw State on February 27, 2011.
It was a hit parade throughout the Memphis lineup as six Tigers finished with multiple hits in the game. Kane Barrow, Nate Rupiper and Jake Little each had three hits, while Zach Schritenthal and Tucker Tubbs had two hits apiece.
Colton Hathcock pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief and picked up his first career win. He struck out four batters and allowed just one run on two hits.
Belmont grabbed an early lead with a run in the first inning. The Bruin's lead-off batter, Alec Diamond, reached on an error to start the game and came around to score on a two-out single to left field.
Tucker Tubbs blasted the Tigers into the lead in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run to left field. Barrow reached on a two-out error in front of Tubbs.
Memphis did more two-out damage in the bottom of the second inning with four straight hits with two down.
Little singled to center field to get things started and Darien Tubbs drove him in with a triple in the gap in right-center field. Schritenthal drove in Tubbs with a hard-hit single at the first baseman. After Schritenthal stole second base, Barrow capped off the inning with an RBI single to right field.
Starter Matt Armstrong seemed to settle in and pitched scoreless frames in the second and third innings.
Darien Tubbs and the Tigers tacked on four more runs with two outs in the third inning. After Nate Rupiper, Brandon Montgomery and Jake Little all reached base, Darien Tubbs hammered his first career grand slam.
The first nine runs scored by Memphis all came with two-outs.
Belmont responded with four runs on a pair of home runs in the top of the fourth inning, to cut the Memphis lead to 9-5. Trey McNickle was called upon out of the bullpen to get out of the inning.
Darien Tubbs put the game to bed with his two-run homer in the seventh.
Hathcock was called upon to start the fifth inning and pitched into the eighth. Craig Caufield relieved Hathcock in the eighth and tossed the final 1 1/3 innings of the game.
