MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Andrew Lantrip tossed his second complete game of the season to lead No. 14 Houston past Memphis, 3-2, in the series opener Thursday at FedExPark.
Due to the threat of inclement weather Friday, the second game of the series has been moved to a 1:00 p.m. start time. The series finale is still scheduled for 12 Noon Saturday.
Cougar center fielder Ashford Fulmer's two-out solo home run in the top of the seventh inning proved to be the winning run. The homer was his second of the season.
Memphis starter Caleb Wallingford gave up three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. He struck out four batters and didn't issue any walks. The loss dropped his record to 3-3 this season.
Each time the Tigers scored in the game the Cougars had an immediate answer.
Catcher Carter White started a two-out rally in the bottom of the second with a single into center field. After he moved to second base on a wild pitch, third baseman Zach Schritenthal drove him in with a double down the left field line.
The Cougars replied, tying the game 1-1 in the top of the third inning. Nine-hole hitter Zac Taylor singled up the middle and stole second base. With two outs Kyle Survance drove him in with a single that dropped just in fair territory in right field.
Houston executed a double steal on a strikeout to grab a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth. With runners on the corners and one out, Wallingford struck out Justin Montemayor and both runners were off. White threw back to Wallingford but the return throw to the plate wasn't in time.
The Tigers knotted the game back up 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. First baseman Tucker Tubbs reached on an error and designated hitter Jake Little singled to open the frame.
Right fielder Chris Carrier attempted to sacrifice the runners over but Lantrip made a great play to cut down the lead runner at third base. After a ground out by White advanced the runners over, Tubbs scored on a passed ball by Houston catcher Jacob Campbell.
Center fielder and lead-off man Darien Tubbs was the only Tiger with multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-4. Little, Carrier, White, Schritenthal and Jake Overbey each had a hit in the game.
Blake Myers and Craig Caufield each pitched a scoreless inning in relief for the Tigers.
