MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Memphis used a three-run sixth inning to beat USF, 6-4, in a pivotal series deciding game Saturday at FedExPark. The win improves the Tigers American Athletic Conference record to 7-5 and keeps them in second place in the league.
Tigers' starting pitcher Connor Alexander was solid for five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. He finished with five strikeouts and no walks. Relievers Blake Myers, Craig Caufield and Nolan Blackwood pitched the remaining four innings to seal the win.
The Bulls got on the board first in the top of the third inning on three straight singles. Alexander did well to pitch out of the jam, allowing only the one run and leaving two runners stranded on base.
Memphis not only got the run right back in the third but grabbed the lead. Shortstop Jake Overbey worked a walk to start the bottom of the third and was sacrificed to second base by Darien Tubbs.
Third baseman Zach Schritenthal drove in Overbey with a single to right field and moved to second base on an error by the right fielder. Right fielder Kane Barrow gave the Tigers the lead with an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
Overbey, who had been struggling, finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
USF catcher Levi Borders started the sixth inning with a lead-off single and Memphis head coach Daron Schoenrock turned to Blake Myers out of the bullpen. Myers gave up a single to the first batter he faced, allowing Levi Borders to go to third base.
The game-tying run came home on an errant throw on what might have been a groundball double play. Myers worked out of the jam allowing just the one run.
The Tigers came right back with a big bottom of the sixth inning. Right fielder Chris Carrier walked and stole second base with one out to get the rally started. Catcher Carter White singled to put runners on the corners with one out.
Memphis loaded the bases on a fielder's choice by Brandon Montgomery. The freshman second baseman hit a chopper and the third baseman threw home but Carrier went back to third base safely.
Designated hitter Nate Rupiper tied the game with a single to center field. The go-ahead run scored on a safety squeeze bunt by Overbey. Center fielder Darien Tubbs added another run with a sacrifice fly.
Rupiper started all three games of the series with USF and batted .600 with six hits, two RBI and a run scored.
Myers pitched two innings and gave up just two hits to record his third win of the season.
USF got a run in each of the eight and ninth innings but it wasn't enough for the Bulls.
Memphis also tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Rupiper singled with two outs and was pinch run for by Carlos Williams, who proceeded to steal second base. Overbey drove him in with his second hit and RBI of the game.
Blackwood pitched 1 1/3 innings and notched his 12th save of the season.
