Memphis, Tenn. - After dropping the opening game of the series, 6-2 to USF, Memphis starting pitcher Dylan Toscano tossed a dominant complete game to lead the Tigers to a 4-1 win over the Bulls. The doubleheader split sets up a rubber match Saturday at 2:00 p.m., pending inclement weather.
Toscano had to pitch out of a jam in the first inning after allowing a hit and a walk. The senior right-hander would then retire the next 17 batters he faced. He didn't allow a USF base-runner from the second through sixth innings. A two-out hit in the seventh was the only other man on base until the ninth.
He finished with seven strikeouts and the first-inning walk was the only free pass of the game. He allowed just five hits and one unearned run. The win improved his record to 6-1 this season.
USF also got a complete-game performance from its Game Two starter, Casey Mulholland. He allowed four runs on 12 hits and struck out ten batters.
The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead with five hits in the bottom of the third inning to support Toscano. Designated hitter Nate Rupiper started the frame with a single and moved to second on a ground out.
With two outs, third baseman Zach Schritenthal doubled to deep left field to score Rupiper. Right fielder Kane Barrow followed with an RBI single to left-center field. After Tucker Tubbs singled to move Barrow to third, right fielder Chris Carrier drove in the third run with a safety squeeze bunt.
Memphis did some more damage with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Tucker Tubbs doubled down the left field line and Carrier brought him in with an RBI-single.
Carrier finished 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. The heart of the Memphis batting order, Barrow, Tucker Tubbs, Carrier and Carter White, all finished with two hits in the game.
Memphis also opened the scoring in the first game of the doubleheader with a run in the second inning. White doubled into the gap in left center to open the bottom of the frame and Rupiper brought him home with a double of his own down the third-base line.
The Bulls tied the game after Luke Borders singled and came around to score on a double by Austin Lueck.
The game-winning runs came across in a four-run sixth inning that included a two-run homer by right fielder Luke Maglich.
Caleb Wallingford gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits in five innigns pitched. He struck out five batters. The loss dropped his record to 3-5.
USF starter Jimmy Herget allowed one run on six hits in 7 1/3 innings pitched and upped his record to 7-1.
