Final Stats

Memphis, Tenn. - A three-run homer in the seventh inning was all Belmont needed to beat Memphis, 3-1, Wednesday night at FedExPark. Tucker Tubbs was 3-for-4 with the only Tiger run driven in but had his streak of six consecutive games with a home run snapped.

Colin Lee started for Memphis and despite having to pitch out of some jams, kept the Bruins off the board for 3 1/3 innings of work.

Colton Hathcock came out of the bullpen to relieve Lee and was stellar for the first 2 2/3 innings pitched. The freshman right-hander retired the first eight batters he faced, including five strikeouts.

Unfortunately the seventh inning was a different story. Hathcock allowed the first two batters to reach to start the seventh inning, first on a walk and then on a hit-by-pitch. Both runners were advanced on a sacrifice bunt before shortstop Kyle Conger followed with a three-run home run to break the deadlock.

Memphis had plenty of opportunities in the game but left eight men on base.

The only Tiger run came in the bottom of the eighth inning after shortstop Jake Overbey and center fielder Darien Tubbs both singled to lead it off.

Belmont turned to reliever Matthew Kinney who struck out pinch-hitter Nate Rupiper and Kane Barrow. With two outs Tucker Tubbs came through with a double to right field to score Overbey and get the Tigers on the board.

Kinney would get out of the inning and pitch a scoreless bottom of the ninth to record his third save of the season.

Memphis will turn its attention back to American Athletic Conference play this weekend when it hosts USF for a three-game series starting Friday at FedExPark.
