Tigers Come From Behind for 8-3 Win
Apr 11, 2015 | Baseball
CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Memphis scored seven runs over the final three innings to complete a comeback win over Cincinnati, 8-3, Saturday night at Marge Schott Stadium. The rubber match of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 12 Noon (CST).
Dylan Toscano started and tossed seven innings to pick up the win and improved to 5-1 this season. He struck out four batters. Relievers Colton Hatchcock, Craig Caufield and Nolan Blackwood combined the pitch a near-perfect final three innings out of the bullpen.
With the Tigers trailing 3-1 going to the seventh inning, first baseman Tucker Tubbs blasted his fifth home run of the week to cut into the Bearcats lead and chase the starter, David Orndorff, from the game. Tubbs, who has homered in four consecutive games, is batting .563 this week with six RBI and eight runs scored.
Cincinnati turned to their starter-turned-closer Andrew Zellner and he got out of the seventh. But in the eighth inning Memphis went to work on him. Zellner hit shortstop Jake Overbey to open the inning and center fielder Darien Tubbs followed with a single.
After a fielder's choice ground out on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt, right fielder Kane Barrow came through with a clutch double off the right field wall to score Darien Tubbs from second base.
After an intentional walk of Tucker Tubbs, right fielder Chris Carrier drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI-ground out.
Memphis then gave themselves some breathing room with four runs in the top of the ninth. After designated hitter Jake Little and catcher Carter White both worked walks to open the top of the ninth, Darien Tubbs and second baseman Brandon Montgomery hit back-to-back home runs.
With homers in the ninth inning, it marked the third time this week that the Tigers hit back-to-back homers in a game.
Toscano scuffled through the early innings and allowed a run in the first before the two runs in the fifth. He put the lead off man on base in each of the first three innings. The senior pitcher tossed perfect sixth and seventh innings to finish his day.
First baseman Tucker Tubbs worked a walk to start the second inning and advanced over to third after a pair of ground outs. Memphis tied the game on an infield single by designated hitter Jake Little.
Darien Tubbs finished 2-for-5 with 3 RBI and two runs scored. Barrow was also 2-for-5 and drove in one run.
