MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A pair of three-run innings and a ninth-inning insurance run by Ole Miss was enough to hold off Memphis Tuesday night at AutoZone Park. The Tigers (17-6, 2-1 AAC) will turn their attention to a three-game series with preseason conference favorite No. 20 Houston (20-9, 1-2 AAC) this weekend.
Memphis got off to a great start with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Center fielder Darien Tubbs opened the game with a single up the middle on the first pitch from Rebels starter Evan Anderson.
Second baseman Brandon Montgomery then sharply singled to right field and the Ole Miss outfielder misplayed it allowing Tubbs to score from first base and Montgomery to advance to third.
With Montgomery at third, Kane Barrow followed with an RBI-single through the left side of the infield.
The Tigers added to their lead in the next inning when right fielder Chris Carrier hammered a one-out solo home run to left-center field.
Barrow finished the game 4-for-5 with two RBI, while Carrier was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Memphis starting pitcher Alex Gunn pitched in and out of trouble through the first four innings but kept the Rebels off the board.
Ole Miss got to Gunn with two outs in the fifth. The senior left-hander quickly retired the first two batters of the frame but the Rebels followed with three straight singles to plate their first run of the game.
First baseman Sikes Orvis followed with a two-run double into the gap in left-center to tie the game 3-3. Gunn allowed the three runs on nine hits in five innings of work.
Colton Hathcock relieved Gunn to start the sixth inning and pitched the first perfect frame of the ballgame.
The freshman righty issued a lead-off walk to second baseman Will Golson in the top of the seventh and Ole Miss took advantage. Golson advanced to third on a single by shortstop Errol Robinson that was just out of the reach of a diving Carrier in right field. The Rebels took the lead when Golson scored on a wild pitch.
Third baseman Colby Bortles blew the game open with a two-run double to deep left field.
Blake Myers came out of the bullpen with Bortles at second and nobody out and got the Tigers out of the inning.
Memphis got a run back in each of the next two innings. Third baseman Zach Schritenthal opened the bottom of the seventh inning with a single and Barrow came through again with an RBI triple to left-center field.
With two outs in the eighth catcher Carter White singled and scored when Carrier doubled off the wall in left field.
Junior Trey McNickle pitched a scoreless eighth inning but the Rebels added an insurance run in the ninth courtesy of a solo home run by center fielder J.B. Woodman off of Craig Caufield.
Ole Miss reliever Matt Denny was credited with the win and Wyatt Short picked up his fourth save of the season.
