TULSA, Okla. - The Tigers jumped out to an early lead, but were unable to hold on as the Golden Hurricane stormed back to defeat Memphis 13-2 in five innings in the final game of the weekend series at Collins Family Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Memphis (9-15, 0-3 American Athletic Conference) scored a pair of runs in the first inning, but just like the first game, the UofM left runs off the board by leaving the bases full.
Jordan Richwood (5-9) took the loss. She threw three innings and gave up six hits and four runs, while striking out a batter. Calli Irvin and Katie Brignac combined for the other 4.2 innings. For Tulsa, Caitlin Sill went the distance while giving up four hits and two runs. She walked three batters, all in the first inning.
The Golden Hurricane (19-10, 3-0 AAC) outhit Memphis 11-4 on the afternoon and made one error to the Tigers' 3. Tulsa scored four runs in the third and fourth inning, and then five in the fifth to take the game.
Tulsa's lone error came on the first at-bat of the game as Kyler Trosclair hit a ground ball to the shortstop, who was unable to come up cleanly, allowing Trosclair to reach safely. Consecutive walks to Hannah Harrell and Lindsay Crowdus loaded the bases for Cierra Mangum. Mangum knocked in her team-leading 14th RBI with a seeing eye single that evaded the gloves of the diving shortstop and third baseman. Brignac, then in the designated player spot, drove in her second RBI of the weekend with a sacrifice fly to right field, giving Memphis a 2-0 lead.
Anna Thomas drew the third walk of the inning to load the bases again with only one out, but Tulsa escaped the jam as a ball hit back to the pitcher started a 1-2-3 double play. Crowdus was out at home and Brooke Lee was just beaten out at first.
Richwood set Tulsa down in order in the first. The Golden Hurricane managed to get a one-out double in the second. A bunt single put runners on the corner. The runner on first stole second during the next at-bat, and the runner from third took off for home as soon as Haleigh Ross made the throw. Lee fielded Ross' throw and alertly fired it back home to catch the runner before she could slide in safely. Richwood struck out the next batter to end the inning.
After a fly out to lead off the bottom of the third, a single turned into a two-base error as the ball found its way past Crowdus to the fence, giving the Golden Hurricane an opportunity to score with one out. A wild pitch made it 2-1, and then a single, walk and a triple gave Tulsa its first lead at 3-2. They'd add a fourth with another single and would not relinquish the lead.
Up next for the Tigers is a doubleheader against Alcorn State on Wednesday at the Tiger Softball Complex. On Saturday, Memphis will play host to East Carolina for the UofM's AAC home opener.
