Memphis senior left-hander Alex Gunn struck out a career-high seven in six scoreless innings of work as the Tigers beat Arkansas State 5-2 Tuesday at FedExPark.
With the team's sixth-straight win, the Tigers improved to 10-4 heading into a four-game, weekend home series with Alcorn State. The Alcorn State series begins with a 6:30 p.m. game Friday night. The two teams will play a 1 p.m. double-header on Saturday before closing out the series with a single game at 1 on Sunday.
Arkansas State slipped to 8-9 with the loss. The Red Wolves travel to Georgia Southern for a Sun Belt Conference series this weekend.
Gunn, who missed the 2014 season with an injury, has returned to pitch 12 scoreless innings in 2015, notching a pair of wins in two starts. In addition to striking out seven, hescattered three hits and walked two batters.
Memphis reliever Nolan Blackwood earned his sixth save of the year. Arkansas State starter Chandler Hawkins suffered the loss to drop to 1-4.
Memphis jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings.
The Tigers scored in the first inning for a fourth straight game. Darien Tubbs and Jake Overbey led off the bottom of the first with consecutive hits. Tubbs would steal third and score when Kane Barrow grounded into a double play.
Memphis added two runs in the second inning after Chris Carrier and Brandon Montgomery led off the inning with base hits up the middle. Corey Chafin's sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position. With two outs, Zach Schritenthal beat out a grounder to the right side of the infield for a base hit to score a run. An error on the play allowed Montgomery to come around and score from second, giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
Tucker Tubbs drew a two-out walk in the third inning. A single by Carrier moved Tubbs to third and he would score on Montgomery's single.
Memphis would add an unearned run in the fifth inning.
Montgomery, a freshman from Collierville, was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a double to lead the Tigers at the plate. Carrier and Srietenthal also had multi-hit games for Memphis Tuesday night.
After Gunn left the game following the sixth inning, Arkansas State scored runs in the seventh and eighth inning to cut the Tigers' lead to 5-2.
Against Memphis closer Blackwood in the top of the ninth, Arkansas State left runners on the corners. Matt Burgess led off the ninth inning with a double and pinch runner Collin Massanelli advanced to third on a ground out. Blackwood would strikeout pinch hitter Eric Wilcosson before Ty White drew a walk. Zach George, A-State's leading hitter who came into the game with a .404 average, flew out to deep center field for the final out of the game.
