Memphis Outlasts Marist in Extra Innings

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The University of Memphis softball team defeated Marist 7-5 in nine innings to open the College of Charleston Invitational on Friday morning.
The game was the first in 10 days for the Tigers (7-8) who have battled weather for the majority of the early season. It also marked the first extra-inning game for the team this season.
Marist (4-6) took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Memphis countered with a two-run homer in the second to take a 2-1 lead. The Red Foxes tied the score in the fourth inning. The Tigers then scored two runs to top fifth that Marist answered in the bottom of the sixth. In extra innings with the International tie breaker in affect, the two teams traded runs in the eighth before Memphis pulled away with a two-run ninth.
Sophomore first baseman Anna Thomas gave Memphis its first lead with her first career home run and RBI in the second inning. Thomas went 2-for-5 in the game with two RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore centerfielder Lindsay Crowdus tied a career high with four hits. It is her ninth game in her career with three hits or more and first this season. Crowdus went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk, reaching base in all five plate appearances.
Senior RHP Jordan Richwood (5-4) earned the victory in relief. Richwood pitched the final three innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts. Freshman Molly Smith started the game and pitched a career high six innings. Smith allowed four runs on six hits with five strikeouts and five walks.
Marist took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Miranda Perez reached base on a one-out walk and stole second on a strikeout. Janna Korak then delivered a two-out RBI single up the middle.
Thomas gave Memphis the lead in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run to left. The hit also scored Haleigh Ross who had reached on a one-out walk.
After Marist had tied the score in the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers scored two runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Crowdus led off the inning on a single and scored on a ground out by Ross. An error on the play also allowed Cierra Mangum to cross the plate for the Tigers.
Marist tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with two runs on three hits and left the bases loaded.
In the eighth, both teams scored their inherited runners on second. Kyler Trosclair knocked in Hannah Harrell with a two-out single to left.
Wheeler Hill came around to score from second for Memphis in the ninth inning on an error. Harrell then drove in Lindsay Crowdus with a single to cap the scoring.
Memphis plays New Mexico in its second game of the tournament on Friday afternoon.
