Memphis 11, Middle Tennessee 0 Game Box
Memphis senior Alex Gunn gave up one hit and struck out four in six scoreless innings of work while the Tiger offense banged out 14 hits in an 11-0 shutout win over Middle Tennessee Wednesday at FedExPark.
With the victory, Memphis swept a two-game midweek series from the Raiders and improved to 6-4. Middle Tennessee is now 8-6.
Gunn, who redshirted the 2014 season due to an injury and kept having his 2015 debut pushed back by weather, started on the hill for the first time since May 18, 2013. The Clinton, Miss., native retired 18 of the 20 batters he faced, giving up a two-out walk in the second and a two-out double in the third. A hit batter in the sixth inning was retired when Middle Tennessee hit into a double play to end the frame.
The six innings of shutout work were the most by Gunn since giving up three hits in seven scoreless innings of work in a 6-0 win at Alabama exactly two years ago Thursday. As the Tigers' Sunday starter in 2013, Gunn started 15 games, going 3-4 with a 3.11 earned run average.
Against Middle Tennessee Wednesday, Gunn was backed up by error-free play in the field and an offense that put six runs on the board through four innings.
Memphis loaded the bases with one out in the third inning. Batting in the eight hole, Tyler Dixon singled and moved to second on a base hit by Zach Schritenthal. Darien Tubbs loaded the bases when he drew a walk before Jake Overbey broke the 0-0 deadlock with a single to center field. Memphis would ground into a double play to end the inning but would extend its lead an inning later with five runs on five hits.
Memphis loaded the bases on singles by Tucker Tubbs, Carter White and Brandon Montgomery. White would shield MTSU shortstop Dustin Delgado on a Chris Carrier grounder to force the fielder into an error and score two runnerson the play. Dixon would single to score Montgomery and later score on a balk. Memphis would add a fifth run in the inning on an Overbey double down the right field line.
Dixon finished the day 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Overbey was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Memphis continues a two-week home stand this weekend with a three-game series against Eastern Illinois. The series is currently slated to begin Friday with a 6:30 p.m. game and continues with games at 2 on Saturday and 1 on Sunday.
