STORRS, Conn. - - The University of Memphis women's basketball team (13-15, 7-10) struggled to handle the full court press and the transition offense at No. 1 Connecticut (28-1, 17-0) in a 87-24 loss at Connecticut, Saturday.
"It's mental before you even set foot on the floor," Head Coach Melissa McFerrin said. "If you don't go out and not know that you are going to keep fighting, even when stuff goes wrong, you're in trouble. There were a lot of dead balls in the 31-0 run and that let UConn set their pressure and we just had trouble handling that, and adding to that, we didn't shoot well."
UConn built a 10-2 lead off three straight buckets in transition, including a pair of three-point field goals from senior Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and the Tigers could never find the goal in the opening half, shooting just 13.3 percent in the opening half and trailing 54-9 at the break.
The second half wasn't much better as Memphis got out for occasional run-outs, but still could not get the ball to fall.
Ariel Hearn led Memphis with seven points on 3-for-20 shooting while Asianna Fuqua-Bey, Mooriah Rowser and Courtney Powell all added four points.
Mosqueda-Lewis led all players with 21 points on her senior day, while Breanna Stewart finished with 21 points. Gabby Williams added a double-double off the bench of 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Moriah Jefferson finished with 12 points and six assists.
Memphis returns home to host its final regular season game, Monday, when SMU comes to town for the first meeting of the season between the two programs.
