Current interim head coach first coaching hire by Norvell
Memphis head football coach Mike Norvell announced Monday that he will retain current interim head coach Darrell Dickey as he assembles his first coaching staff at the University of Memphis. Dickey is currently serving as the Tigers' interim coach for the upcoming Birmingham Bowl and is finishing his eighth season overall, the fourth in this current stint, with the Memphis football team.
Â
"I am extremely excited to announce that Darrell Dickey will be remaining on staff at the University of Memphis," Norvell said. "I cannot think of a better first hire for this coaching staff. Coach Dickey has brought a culture of winning to the University of Memphis program. He has incredible relationships around this community as well as tremendous recruiting ties both here and in Texas."
Â
Prior to last season, Dickey, who spent his first three seasons in this second stint at Memphis as the team's offensive coordinator and running backs coach, was elevated to assistant head coach.
Â
This year, he also served as a co-offensive coordinator and helped guide a Memphis offense that ranks 12th nationally in total offense, averaging 510.4 yards per game. The Tigers' 42.7 points per game currently ranks seventh in the NCAA. The Tigers' running game has averaged 186.2 yards per game and scored 29 rushing TDs this season.
Â
The Tigers are currently in final exams and will return to practice for the upcoming bowl game this weekend.
Â
Tickets for Memphis' Dec. 30th match-up against Auburn are currently on sale through the University of Memphis ticket office. Tickets can be purchased online at www.GoTigersGoTix.com and are $50. University of Memphis students can purchase two tickets for $25 each with their valid student D in person at the Athletic Ticket office.
Â
The game will air nationally on ESPN at 11 a.m. (CT) on Dec. 30th and will be the Tigers' second match-up this season against an SEC foe. Memphis defeated fellow SEC member Ole Miss, 37-24, back in October.
