Men's, women's team to compete at Commodore Indoor Opener.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The college fall semester is winding down, but for the University of Memphis men's and women's track and field squads, their indoor seasons are just starting.
The Tigers begin their schedule Saturday, Dec. 5 when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., to compete in the Commodore Indoor Opener on the Vanderbilt University campus. The field events start at 10:30 a.m. (CT), with the running events beginning at 1 p.m. (CT).
This is Memphis' lone indoor meet of the fall semester. The Tigers' indoor schedule picks up again after the Christmas/New Year's break at the A-State Invitational and Multis in Jonesboro, Ark., Jan. 22-23.
For head coach Kevin Robinson and his staff, Saturday's meet has two primary functions. First, the meet gives the coaches a baseline from which to work for the rest of the season, and second, it gives the student-athletes something to look forward to at the end of fall practice.
"This meet serves a couple of purposes for us," Robinson said. "One, it gives the coaching staff a frame of reference to work with, so when we bring the teams back in January, we know where they stood before the break. That's one of the biggest reasons I schedule this one meet at the end of the fall semester.
"Second, scheduling this meet gives the student-athletes something to train for during the fall. The fall training period is a grind. It's relentless and monotonous. To have this meet at the end of the semester gives the student-athletes a spark during that fall grind. It keeps them fired up and gives them something to look forward to.
"The squads have several newcomers, and I'm looking to see how they compete, how they handle the pressure, how they handle the moment Saturday. We also have several veterans returning, and I'm confident they will be ready. I think we can do really well in some of our stronger events. Overall, I'm looking for our student-athletes to compete and to show some tenacity and a 'refuse-to-lose' mentality."
Other team competing at Saturday's Commodore Indoor Opener are Austin Peay, Belmont, Lipscomb, Louisville, Middle Tennessee, Murray State, Tennessee State, Trevecca Nazarene, Western Kentucky and Vanderbilt.
