Tigers back on the field after four-day break.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After the Memphis football players and staff reconvened in Birmingham on Saturday following the holiday break, the team took to the field at Krulak Stadium on the campus of Birmingham-Southern College, Sunday morning, to continue bowl preparations for the Dec. 30th Birmingham Bowl game.
"We were a little rusty," Interim Head Coach Darrell Dickey said. "It was obvious everybody had a good Christmas, but we did have a good workout as far as energy and effort are concerned. We were just not as sharp as we normally are, but that's to be expected. "
The Tigers practiced for over an hour and a half in preparation for a second bowl game in as many seasons, then returned to the team hotel to recover and change for an afternoon visit to the Birmingham Civil Rights Museum. The team will follow the museum visit with a team dinner and entertainment at a comedy club before resuming practice on the field on Monday morning.
"I think the team came out ready to practice," junior Sam Craft said. "We had a lot of fun and are trying to get prepared for this game. Just having those four days off, we were a little rusty, but that just comes with time. We're going to take these next couple of practices to get ready for the game."
On Monday, the team will again practice at Birmingham-Southern before a selection of players visit the Children's Hospital in Birmingham. The team will also tour the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in the afternoon before another team social event and dinner on Monday night.
Memphis will face SEC foe Auburn on Wednesday at 11 a.m. (CT). The game will be carried live on ESPN.
