Memphis Overpowers IUPUI, 84-48
Dec 22, 2015 | Men's Basketball
Tigers never trail en route to sixth win in seven games
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Eleven different players found the scoresheet, led by junior Avery Woodson, who had 16 points, as the Memphis men's basketball team won for the sixth time in seven games, defeating IUPUI, 84-48, Tuesday at FedExForum.
The Tigers limited the visiting Jaguars (4-10) to just 25 percent shooting and led wire-to-wire for the third time this season to improve to 8-3. Woodson was 5-for-7 from the field, pacing a bench which recorded 51 points, while K.J. Lawson tallied 15 points. Shaq Goodwin and Ricky Tarrant tallied nine points apiece, and freshman Nick Marshall added a career-high eight points and nine boards.
"[It was a] good win," said Memphis head coach Josh Pastner. "The guys played very ... defensively, we were good from tip. After the game on Friday, we gave off Saturday. Sunday, we did a two-hour practice of straight defense. Monday, we did a two-hour practice straight defense. We did shoot around today, straight defense. I thought it had us carry over. We defended very well.
"Jeremiah Martin did a nice job at starting there, [he] gave us some good energy," Pastner continued. "But, when you hold the team that we held to with the percentages, we did a nice job. The only thing I would say is they had 12 offensive rebounds. Overall, it was a really good game. We shot the ball well from the free-throw line. Sixteen assists and 28 made field goals. I liked the fact that we only had four turnovers … overall, a good win."
The Tigers, who played with a different starting lineup for the first time this season, began the game on a 15-2 run over six-and-half minutes. Kedren Johnson and K.J. Lawson capped the spurt with consecutive 3-pointers to force an IUPUI timeout as Memphis was off and running.
The Jaguars closed to within nine at with four straight points by Nick Osborne and Darell Combs, respectively, but a Goodwin jumper, Tarrant free throws and a basket from K.J. Lawson pushed the Tigers' lead to 13 at 21-8 at the eight-minute mark as they were not threatened from there.
The Tigers were up, 39-17, at the after 20 minutes for their largest advantage at halftime of the season.
Memphis turned 18 turnovers into 13 points and collected 14 offensive rebounds and 11 second-chance points.
Combs paced the Jaguars with 15 points and Osborne had eight points and 12 boards.
The Tigers return to action hosting Tulane Dec. 29 at noon on ESPNU.
