Earns first career weekly honor from The American.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis' Ariel Hearn has been named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
It is the first American Athletic Conference Player of the Week honor in Hearn's career. Previously, the Memphis, Tenn., native had been named to the league's weekly honor roll eight times for her career, including twice earlier in 2015-16 (Nov. 30, Dec. 7).
Hearn also was honored as this week's CollegeSportsMadness.com's American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Hearn helped lead the Tigers to a 2-0 record last week with victories over Central Michigan 64-61 (road) and Illinois 81-75 (home). In the two contests, the 5-foot-8 guard averaged 23.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.5 steals. Hearn shot 50 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from the three-point arc and 81.8 percent from the free throw line.
In the Dec. 15 win at Central Michigan, Hearn scored 18 points, including the game-winning three-point play with :06.5 left. She netted the game-winner after picking up a Chippewas' turnover caused by teammate Loysha Morris and racing to the other end for a layup. Hearn was fouled on the play and converted the free throw for the 64-61 win.
Hearn saved her best all-around performance of 2015-16 to date in the home win over Illinois Dec. 19. She scored a season-high 29 points and also had seven rebounds, six assists, two blocked shots and five steals. The two blocked shots and five steals tied career highs, while the seven boards and six assists tied season bests. Her 29 points were one shy of tying her career high of 30 points, which she set versus USF last season (Jan. 31, 2015).
With her 29 points against the Fighting Illini, Hearn moved into the top-10 on the Tigers all-time scoring chart. She is in the No. 10 spot with 1,664 career points. Hearn's six assists give her 352 for her career. She is in the No. 8 spot on the Tigers all-time assists list.
Hearn now is the only player in Tigers women's basketball history with 1,500 points and 350 assists. She also is on one of three Tigers players – men and women combined – to have 1,500 points and 350 assists (Elliot Perry, Joe Jackson) for a career.
Memphis (6-5) takes a break for the Christmas holiday, but returns to action Dec. 30 with its 2015-16 American Athletic Conference opener at Temple. Game time from Philadelphia, Pa., is 6 p.m. (CT).
