Levasseur, Hudson-Marks Answer National Team Call-Ups
Nov 30, 2015 | Women's Soccer
Marie Levasseur will head to camp with the full national team for the first time
Memphis women's soccer player Marie Levasseur has earned her first call-up to the full Canadian Women's National Team for its November camp, while her teammate and fellow freshman Chanel Hudson-Marks has been called into the Jamaican U-20 National Team's camp prior to next month's CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Honduras.
Â
Both players completed their freshmen seasons for the Memphis Tigers, playing significant roles. Levasseur featured in every match, starting all but the opener, and finished tied for the team-lead in goals and was second with three assists. Hudson-Marks played in every game, with 10 starts, scoring two goals and assisting on one.
Â
"This is a wonderful opportunity for these young ladies and also for this university," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "You can't put a price on the experience gained from playing at the international level. These experiences will make them better players. It is always an honor for this university to have student-athletes represent their respective countries. We wish them well and will miss them during this time."
Â
The Canadian team is currently training in Vancouver as it prepares to play in a friendly competition, the International Tournament of Natal, in Brazil. Canada will open the group stage of the Natal tournament against Mexico on Dec. 9, before taking on Croatia on Dec. 13 and the home side Brazil on Dec. 16. The third place and final matches will take place on Dec. 20.
Â
The squad, selected by head coach John Herdman, is a blend of youth and experience. In addition to Levasseur, four other players received their first call to the full national team. She will also be in camp alongside Canada's all-time leading goal-scorer Christine Sinclair.
Â
Levasseur will be hoping to make the squad for the upcoming 2016 Olympic Qualifying tournament, which runs from Feb. 10-21 in two Texas cities, Dallas and Houston. The top two nations in each group advance to the semifinals. Only the two finalists qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
Â
Last summer she was a member of the Canadian squad that finished fourth in the Pan American Games that were hosted in Toronto. Levasseur previously competed at the 2014 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup and was a member of the second-place team at the 2013 CONCACAF U17 Women's championship.
Â
Hudson-Marks has joined up with the young Reggae Girlz for a pre-tournament training camp in Honduras prior to the start of the CONCACAF U-20 Women's Championship to be played Dec. 3-13.
Â
Jamaica will open the group stage against the hosts Honduras on Dec. 3, before taking on Canada on Dec. 5 and Trinidad and Tobago on Dec. 7. The semifinals will be on Dec. 11 and the third place and final matches will take place on Dec. 13. The top three teams of the tournament will qualify for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Papua New Guinea.
Â
Hudson-Marks has previously trained with the U-17 and U-20 Jamaican teams but hasn't yet played for her country. The daughter of Jamaican born parents, she is one of 14 Memphis players that reside in Canada.Â
