Memphis QB honored after record setting performance
University of Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch has been named the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his record-setting performance against SMU on Saturday. The weekly honor from the conference marked Lynch's third of the season and fifth of his career.
The American also recognized Temple senior linebacker Tyler Matakevich and Cincinnati sophomore place-kicker Andrew Gantz as players of the week on Monday.
In Memphis' 63-0 shutout of SMU last week, Lynch set an American Athletic Conference record by passing for seven touchdowns. In one half of play, Lynch completed 9-of-14 passes for 222 yards. He spread out the seven touchdown passes to seven different receivers, every player to catch a pass in the first half of the game.
Lynch matched an NCAA FBS record for touchdown passes in a half originally set by Dennis Shaw of San Diego State against New Mexico State on Nov. 15, 1969 and equaled three other times. The last NCAA FBS player to previously pass for seven touchdowns in a half was Bryant Moniz of Hawaii against UC Davis on Sept. 24, 2011.
With his performance against SMU, Lynch added to his Memphis season passing yards record which now stands at 3,670 yards. With the seven touchdown passes, Lynch also established a new season record for touchdown passes and currently has 28 for the year.
Manning Award Star of the Week
Also on Monday, The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, named Lynch one of eight quarterbacks as its "Stars of the Week."
College football fans can now go to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page to vote for what they think was the best performance from the past weekend. When voting closes on Wednesday at 11 a.m., the top vot-getter will be announced as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
While the Manning Award selected 30 quarterbacks for its preseason Watch List and 10 additional quarterbacks were added to the Watch List on Oct. 14, all quarterbacks remain eligible for the honor. The 10 finalists for the Manning Award will be announced on Wednesday and the winner is scheduled to be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship game on Jan. 11.
