USF topped Memphis 3-0 to end the Tigers season
DALLAS, Texas – USF came out firing on all cylinders and beat Memphis 3-0 to eliminate the Tigers from the American Athletic Conference Tournament in the quarterfinals Tuesday at SMU's Westcott Field. The loss ends Memphis season with an 8-8-3 overall record.
"Anytime your season ends it's tough. I thought we came up against a team that really wanted it more than us," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "If you go down you want to go down knowing you gave it your all and I can't say I feel like we did that tonight. This season has been a lot of highs and lows."
USF took the lead in the 14th minute off of a corner kick. Leticia Skeet was able to bury the chance that bounced around in the box before it was finished. Despite the Bulls outshooting Memphis 9-5 in the first half the lead was still just 1-0 at halftime.
Shortly after halftime the Bulls grabbed a second goal to put the Tigers' backs against the wall. Jackie Simpson was played in on a great pass by Olivia Chance and she calmly finished.
Simpson put the match out of reach just a few minutes later with her second goal.
Memphis' first shot of the match came in the 31st minute when Elizabeth Woerner fired from just outside of the box. The shot was directly at the USF goalkeeper and saved.
The Tigers grew into the match a bit in the first half and shortly following their first shot of the match, they earned back-to-back corner kicks.
Sydney Kingston had the Tigers second shot on frame just before halftime but it fell harmlessly into the goalkeeper's arms.
Memphis was held without a shot in the second half, while USF piled on the pressure and had five more shots to finish with 14 total in the match.
"I still feel that the future is bright for this young group moving forward. We have a lot of young kids that got a lot of experience this year and learned what Division I college soccer is all about. I think we have a lot of talent returning and I'm looking forward to getting better and looking forward to the future," Monaghan said.
The Tigers will return nine of the 11 players that started the quarterfinal match against USF and five of those players are freshmen.
