Tigers to honor senior class pre-game on Friday.
The University of Memphis volleyball team (17-14, 8-10 American) will put the final wraps on the 2015 season with a pair of home matches this week, beginning with a Wednesday night match against Tulane and a Friday noon match against Houston. The two matches will be the last of the season for the Tigers and the last home court appearances for seniors Torika Baleilekutu, Lindsey Purvis and Veronica Zimmerman.
Memphis has won three of its last four matches, including a 3-0 sweep at defending conference champs UCF last Friday. It was a balanced team effort that got the road win at UCF, pushing Memphis' mark to 7-4 in road matches. On Sunday, the sped up USF offense kept Memphis behind for two sets, and by the time the Tigers caught up and won a set, USF snuck out of the fourth set with a 26-24 victory, avoiding a need for a fifth set.
The two matches this weekend could well see that missed fifth set. Memphis went the full five with both of this week's opponents on the road earlier this year, coming back from 2-0 down at Houston to win 3-2, and bouncing back after losing the opening set at Tulane to win the fifth set 15-13 in New Orleans.Â
On the year, Memphis is 5-1 in five setters, losing its first of the season at Belmont back in August, then winning the next five, including four in conference play. Tulane, the Tigers' Wednesday night opponent, is no stranger to five setters either. The Green Wave has gone five sets 10 times already this year, sporting a 3-7 mark. But the Green Wave won their last time out in five, downing East Carolina, 3-2 with four players with double digit kills and three with double digit digs.Â
