Volleyball Sweeps UCF on the Road
Nov 20, 2015 | Women's Volleyball
Lilly with 13 kills and Morgan with 10 blocks in road win.
ORLANDO – Led by 13 kills from junior outside Catlin Lilly, the Tiger volleyball team (17-13, 8-9 American) swept UCF (14-15, 8-9 American), 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-19), in conference play Friday night. The win guarantees Memphis a winning season with three regular season games remaining and puts a second consecutive 20-win season within reach. The Tigers are trying to become the first Memphis team to post back-to-back 20-win seasons since the 2006 and 2007 teams both hit the 20-plus win mark. It would also be the third time under Tiger alum April Jauregui that Memphis had posted 20 or more wins in a season.
Up 2-0, the Tigers had to work their way out of a jam in the third set. Memphis trailed 11-7, before Jauregui took a timeout. Out of the break, Lilly downed a kill to start a 3-0 mini run that got the Tigers to 11-10 down before UCF got a kill from Taylor Wickey to stop the run. But the break in Tiger momentum was short-lived as a UCF set error and another Lilly kill pushed the score to 12-all.
After a pair of points from Memphis, UCF called a timeout and used a 3-1 run to retake the lead following the timeout at 15-14. But again Lilly answered with a kill for 15-all, then Memphis got a kill and a block from Summer Morgan to go up 17-15. After one UCF point, Memphis went on a 4-0 run and closed out the victory with a kill from senior Torika Baleilekutu to pick up their third straight victory.
"That was a fun match to coach," Jauregui said. "Our team prepared well all week and we were really locked in tonight. We had some monster performances and I am glad our team is continuing to push at the end of the season."
Lilly led all players with 13 kills, while Morgan added nine kills and a career-best 10 blocks, including four solos. Oluchi Agomuo and Lindsey Purvis each had 12 digs to hold up the defense, while sophomore Faith Myers led the offense with 29 assists.
Memphis out-blocked UCF 14-6 and outhit the home team .221 to .062 for the win.
Memphis will play its final road match of the year, Sunday, at USF at 1 p.m. (ET). Memphis returns home to close out the season at home next week, hosting Tulane, Wednesday, at 7 p.m. (CT) and Houston, Friday, in a match that has moved to noon (CT).
