University of Memphis golf coach Blake Smart has announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to play for the Tigers. Signing with Memphis this week were Peyton Dix (Briarcrest Christian HS/Bartlett), Colin Dubnik (McQuaid Jesuit/Rochester, N.Y.) and Nick Giles (St. Benedict at Auburndale/Germantown).
"This class is a great mix of talent," Smart said. "We have two Legacy Tigers and a guy that is from outside our normal region. One thing they all have in common is their work ethic and their love of all things Memphis. I know this group is ready to get here and create their own legacy both on and off the course. I think our fans and supporters will find that these guys are easy to get behind and believe in."
Dix's mother, Ruth Ann Forsythe Dix, played for Memphis's women's basketball team from 1983-87. Giles' father, Scott Giles, played tennis at Memphis from 1987-91.
Dix is coming off a senior golf season at Briarcrest in which he finished sixth at the TSSAA state tournament and helped lead the Saints to a state runner-up finish. At the TSSAA state tournament his sophomore year, Dix parlayed a five-under par 67 on the second day of play into a fourth-place individual finish.
A two-time "Best of Preps" selection by the Commercial Appeal, Dix finished second at the TSSAA D-II West Regionals his freshman year to help Briarcrest qualify for the state tournament. He was a three-time Most Valuable Player honoree at Briarcrest. Dix qualified for the Tennessee Junior Ryder Cup Team his sophomore and junior season.
Dix is the son of Phillip and Ruth Ann Dix. He has an older brother, Taylor.
"Peyton has all the tools to be an impact player for this team," Smart said. "He is a competitor and I think he will have the opportunity to see time early. One thing I love about Peyton is his pride in being a Tiger and wearing the Memphis logo."
Dubnik helped lead McQuaid Jesuit to sectional championships in both 2014 and 2015. A three-time, All-Greater Rochester selection (2013, 2014 & 205), Dubnik had five, Top 25 finishes at AJGA events as well as several top-10 finishes at other junior championshps.
In 2014, Dubnik tied for fifth at the International Junior Masters match place event and was fourth at the NYS Junior Amateur. He carded a final-round 67 at the US Challenge Cup NE Junior Classic at Bethpage to finish as runner-up. Earlier this year he tied for fifth at the NYS Junior Amateur. All four events featured playing fields of 75+ competitors.
Dubnik is the son of Steve and Clair Dubnik. He has an older sister, Carolyn.
"Colin is that random kid you run across that people wonder how we got to come here and play from New York," Smart said. "But he was so much fun to recruit and the fit with me and the University of Memphis is awesome. He is a rock star student who I feel will leave his mark on the University, and be an ambassador for all the great things this city and institution stand for, and don't misunderstand, this guy has serious game and a ton of speed."
Giles was an eight-time medalist during the 2015 high school season at St. Benedict's. He wrapped up the high school season with a tie for sixth at the TSSAA Division II AA Boys' Championship. Giles was St. Benedict's Golf MVP both in 2014 and 2015. He was also named the MVP of the 2015 Tennessee Junior Cup West Team.
Giles won the USJGT event held at Windyke Country Club and also captured the Tennessee Junior Golf-Elite Series also played at Windyke earlier this year. In 2015, he has qualified for the Tennessee State Open, the Tennessee State Amateur and the TGA Junior Amateur.
Giles is the son of Scott and Christine Giles. He has a younger sister, Elise.
"Nick is a great story. He came on late in his high school career and has worked hard to become one of the better players in the state," Smart said. "He is another Legacy Tiger that brings pride to the program and a work ethic that will make him a factor in the lineup. Nick is the story that people love to hear and he has earned the right to wear the Blue and Gray."
Memphis Golf captured two fall championships and the Tigers were the runners-up at another fall event. Memphis had two individual medalists during the season – Thomas Perrot at the WKU Kenny Perry Invitational and Lars van Meijel at the Pinetree Collegiate.
