Tigers Rifle Defeats Navy

Broughton leads the way with match's top aggregate score.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Sophomore Haylea Broughton had her overall best performance of the season in helping lead the University of Memphis rifle squad to a 4663-4634 Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) victory over Navy Saturday. Both teams entered Saturday's match ranked No. 12 in the most-recent national poll.
The Tigers won both disciplines in securing the win. Memphis defeated the Mids in smallbore 2309-2288 and air rifle 2354-2346.
Broughton, who had a stellar freshman campaign in 2014-15, returned back to that form in Saturday's match versus Navy. The Tulsa, Okla., native posted the match's top aggregate score of 1168 and was the lone Tiger to place in the top-four in both disciplines. She finished second in air rifle (592) and fourth in smallbore (576).
Overall, Memphis had five of the match's top-seven aggregate scores. Following Broughton's first-place performance were junior Amy Fister in third (1165), senior Beth Lee in fifth (1163), junior transfer Jack Berhorst in sixth (1159) and freshman Leighton Dempster in seventh (1159).
The Tigers took the top-two spots in smallbore with Fister first (580) and Berhorst second (580). Broughton was fourth (576), and Dempster was fifth (573).
In air rifle, Lee and Dempster finished in the top-five. Lee was third with a score of 591, and Demspter placed fifth (586).
Memphis wraps up the fall portion of its 2015-16 schedule Nov. 22 when its travels to Jacksonville, Ala., to shoot in the annual Gamecock Invitational. While there, the Tigers also will compete in a GARC match against N.C. State.
