Tigers Rifle Hosts Navy Saturday

Memphis defeated the Mids in Annapolis last season.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After spending last weekend on the road, the University of Memphis rifle team returns home to the Bluff City to host Navy Saturday. The match begins at 9 a.m. (CT) at the Global Training Academy.
Both squads enter Saturday's match ranked No. 12 in the latest Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll.
Coming off what head coach Butch Woolbright and his team believe was a subpar result at the NCAA Championships Rehearsal last Saturday, the Tigers are eager to get back to competition.
"We learned a lot from last weekend's NCAA Championships Rehearsal, but the team left the event disappointed in its performance," said Woolbright. "Our team feels we are better than what we scored last weekend, and we have another opportunity Saturday. We're also tied with Navy in this week's poll, so maybe that will give our team a little motivation."
Last season, the Tigers defeated Navy 4651-4641 in Annapolis, Md., and won both disciplines on their way to the victory. Beth Lee placed first in smallbore, and Haylea Broughton was second in air rifle.
Despite the individual smallbore victory in last season's win over Navy, Lee fought through injuries most of the 2014-15 campaign.
Early this season, Lee has been injury-free, and her scores show it. Lee has posted the Tigers' top aggregate score in five of the squad's six matches in 2015-16. At last Saturday's NCAA Championships Rehearsal, she recorded a team-best 1170 aggregate score. She has recorded an 1170 or higher aggregate score three times and has a team-leading aggregate score average of 1169.3.
"Beth is shooting well," Woolbright said. "Her wrist is not bothering her as it has in the past, and her scores are much better. I'm very proud of her."
Freshman Leighton Dempster has shot well early in her first collegiate season. At last Saturday's NCAA Championships Rehearsal, she set personal bests in smallbore and aggregate score.
Following Saturday's match against Navy, Memphis travels to Jacksonville, Ala., to compete in the Gamecock Invitational Nov. 22. While there in Jacksonville, the Tigers also face No. 10 N.C. State in a Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) head-to-head match.
