Cleveland product is second signee for Memphis in early signing period.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis softball team has added infielder Xiomara Santiago to its signing class as part of the early signing period that is underway until Wednesday, Nov. 18th. Santiago comes to Memphis out of Cleveland, Ohio, from North Royalton High School.
"Xiomara brings us more power," Head Coach Natalie Poole said. "She plays first base, mostly, but can play other positions as well, and she's got great energy. She's going to have a good presence for our team and will be a huge offensive threat. "
Santiago is a four-year letterwinner at North Royalton and has been an all-conference honoree in each season at North Royalton. Also an all-Ohio honorable mention honoree, she was named the team MVP and, at one point, hit a home run in three straight games.
The daughter of Ramon and Jessica Santiago, she also played club ball with the Ohio Lasers and the Beverly Bandits. In 2013, she helped her club team to a fourth place finish at the ASA Nationals when she hit four home runs in eight games at the national tournament in Colorado. She hit her first career grand slam with Coach Poole in the stands at the national tournament.
"We already have great speed on this team and have brought in some kids who can swing the bat," Poole said. "Xiomara, to me, will bring even more power. I think we've got the speed to get some people on, so instead of manufacturing runs, we have some kids who can possibly score multiple runs in one shot."
Santiago also had offers from Indiana, Purdue, Ball State and North Carolina and plans to major in journalism at Memphis. She is the Tigers' second signee of the early signing period, joining Regan Hadley out of Georgetown, Indiana. The Tigers are hoping to sign six newcomers in this early signing period.
