Cabush and Goldenstein earn all-tournament honors.
BRASELTON, Georgia – Behind a pair of top 10 finishers, the University of Memphis women's golf team finished fourth of 13 teams at The Fall Invitational, co-hosted by Charleston Southern and Kennesaw State at Chateau Elan Resort, Tuesday.
Junior Leighann Cabush was the Lady Tigers' top finisher, posting a 212 (70-73-69) to finish tied for fourth overall. Cabush made one of the day's biggest moves up the standings thanks to four birdies, including one on hole three, her second-to-last hole of the tournament. Her third round 69 was a career-best and vaulted her 10 spots up in the individual standings. Her opening round 70 had tied her previous career-best from last year. The fourth place finish was the sixth career top five finish for Cabush and is her best finish since the Bearcat Spring Classic in April.
Sophomore Emily Goldenstein finished one stroke behind her teammate (213 – 68-74-71) to finish sixth overall. After her career-best opening round 68, Goldenstein posted her sixth career top 10 finish following today's third round 71. After starting with a bogey on five, Goldenstein scored par on three of the next six holes, birdying 8 and 10 to move to -1. After five more pars, she then birdied 16 to move to -2 on the day, but gave a stroke back on 17 to move back to one under, where she would finish the day. The top 10 finish is the second of the season for the sophomore, who finished eighth at the Memphis Intercollegiate to start the season.
Sophomore Megan Beane had her best collegiate finish, carding a 224 (74-72-78) to finish tied for 35th, improving on a tie for 41st in the Lady Tigers season opener at Ridgeway Country Club. Beane's second round 72 was the best of her collegiate career, shaving four strokes off her previous best set at the season-opening Memphis Intercollegiate this fall.
Senior Ashleigh Whisenant finished nine spots behind Beane, Tuesday. She finished tied for 44th with a 227 (74-75-78).
Freshman Madison Thomas overcame a first round 81 to post 73-74 in the next two rounds and improved to a tie for 46th overall with a 228.
As a team, Memphis finished fourth with an 870 (286-292-292). Chattanooga won the team title with an 852 and the Mocs' Emily McLennan grabbed individual medalist honors with three rounds under 70 (68-68-69) for a 205, beating Ole Miss' Abby Newton by one stroke.
Memphis will close its fall campaign at the FIU/Pat Bradley Invitational, Oct. 25-27th. The Lady Tigers are the defending tournament champions of the event, winning last year with a school-record team score of 872 and now-graduated senior Ashley Kees tied the school record with a third-round 66 to finish third overall. Goldenstein, Cabush and Michaela Fletcher (currently out with an injury) all finished in the top 10 in last year's event.
