Team sets aggregate record score for season opener.
OXFORD, Miss., and MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis senior Beth Lee and junior Amy Fister each tied personal bests in air rifle and helped lead the No. 10 nationally-ranked Tigers rifle squad to two top-three finishes at the Ole Miss Open and Tiger Open in the season-opening action that wrapped up late Sunday.
Memphis placed third at the Ole Miss Open in Oxford, Miss., and followed with a second-place performance at its own Tiger Open.
At the Ole Miss Open, the Tigers posted an aggregate score of 4668 and finished behind only No. 3 TCU and No. 6 Murray State. The 4668 aggregate score set a program record for the opening match of a season.
Memphis placed second behind No. 3 TCU at its own Tiger Open, recording an aggregate score of 4640.
In both matches, the Tigers placed ahead of No. 8 Jacksonville State, No. 14 Ole Miss and No. 17 UT Martin.
"We performed really well at Ole Miss (Open), and that can be seen in our scores," said head coach Butch Woolbright. "I was proud of our team and what we did at Ole Miss. We didn't shoot that well at our event, and I believe we are better than what we showed.
"Although we didn't shoot well at our home match, this opening week is a good start to the season, and now we can build on it from this point."
The veteran Lee-Fister tandem paced the Tigers effort in both matches. At the Ole Miss Open, Lee and Fister both placed in the top-10 in air rifle and top-15 in smallbore. Lee tied her personal-best air rifle mark with a 593 and finished fifth, while Fister also tied her personal-best air rifle score (590) and was 10th.
Fister was 11th (580) and Lee 13th (579) in smallbore. Fister set a personal-best aggregate score of 1170, which was two points higher than her previous high of 1168 set at last season's NCAA Sectional Qualifier.
Junior Jack Berhorst, a transfer from Murray State, had an impressive start to the season, posting personal bests in smallbore and aggregate score at the Ole Miss Open. Berhorst shot a 580 in smallbore and was the team's top finisher, placing ninth in that discipline. His aggregate score was 1159.
Although her scores did not count in the team results, freshman Leighton Dempster had personal bests in air rifle (583) and aggregate score (1143) at the Ole Miss Open.
Lee and Fister also led Memphis at the Tiger Open. Lee had an aggregate score of 1167, Fister shot a 1165. Lee and Fister placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in smallbore to lead the Tigers. Sophomore Makennon Doran was the squad's top finish in air rifle, scoring a 588 and placing ninth.
Sophomore Haylea Broughton posted the team's third-best aggregate scores at both events. She shot 1164 at both the Ole Miss Open and Tiger Open.
