Tigers Rifle Drops Decision To No. 1 West Virginia Saturday

Four Memphis shooters set career highs in match.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Senior Beth Lee tied her career-best air rifle score and two other Tigers set personal bests, but it wasn't enough as the No. 9 nationally-ranked University of Memphis rifle squad dropped a 4693-4671 decision to No. 1 West Virginia Saturday.
Memphis hosted the three-time defending NCAA champion Mountaineers in the Bluff City. West Virginia took both disciplines, winning smallbore 2326-2316 and air rifle 2367-2355.
For the sixth time in her career, Lee tied her personal-high air rifle score with a 593 against West Virginia. She also posted her career second-best smallbore score of 583 for an aggregate score of 1176. Her aggregate score was one point shy of tying her career-high mark of 1177, which she set at the 2014 NCAA Championships.
In Saturday's match, Lee tied for second in air rifle and placed second in both smallbore and aggregate score.
Sophomore Makennon Doran shot a career-best 579 in smallbore and placed fifth overall in the discipline in Saturday's match. Doran recorded a 582 in air rifle for an aggregate score of 1161.
Freshman Leighton Dempster shot a personal-best 589 in air rifle and placed fifth overall in the discipline against West Virginia. Dempster's 589 was one point better than her previous air rifle career high of 588, which she posted against Army Oct. 18. Sierra Czap, another Tigers freshman, also set a personal best in air rifle, firing a 581.
Junior Amy Fister recorded the squad's second-highest aggregate score against the Mountaineers Saturday. Fister shot a 576 in smallbore and a 587 in air rifle for an 1163 aggregate score.
Memphis returns to action Nov. 7 when its travels to Akron, Ohio, to compete in the NCAA Championships Rehearsal at the University of Akron. The Zips are hosting the 2016 NCAA Championships in March.
