Memphis Takes Down UConn in Overtime
Oct 03, 2015 | Men's Soccer
Chandler Klemm scores first of the season to give Memphis the win
Chandler Klemm scored in the 106th minute to give Memphis a 1-0 overtime victory over UConn Saturday night on the road. The win is the Tigers' first in American Athletic Conference play this season.
"I'm thrilled to death about the result," Memphis head coach Richard Mulrooney said. "Anytime you can go on the road in conference and win is really great. Connecticut is a top team and to go in there and get a result builds a lot of confidence."
Klemm got on the end of a low cross from freshman midfielder Mason Morise and fired it into the back of the net to score his first career goal for Memphis.
"Chandler (Klemm) has been getting more and more confident and getting adjusted. He is just getting better and better with every game. He works tirelessly. We had him play in three different spots on the field tonight. I couldn't be happier for him tonight," Mulrooney said.
Memphis (2-5-2, 1-0-1 AAC) was able to hold UConn off the board all night and the teams were scoreless after regulation and the first overtime period. The Tigers finished the match with eight shots but were able to create more chances than the Huskies in overtime.
Tigers' goalkeeper Jake Leeker made four saves in the first half but wasn't called on again for the remainder of the match.
The Tigers are unbeaten in their last three games now with consecutive wins. After starting the season with four straight losses, Memphis has won two and drawn two in their last five matches.
"Jake (Leeker) came up with a couple big saves that we needed. The whole back four was so strong tonight. They played well connected and covered each other. It was a complete team performance in the back and the guys stepped up to the challenge," said Mulrooney.
Memphis is back home to host SMU, who is 2-0 in league play, at Mike Rose Soccer Complex Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The Tigers will then head back to the northeast to play at Temple Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
