"I think we are gaining more and more confidence," Memphis head coach Richard Mulrooney said. "Our result against USF further shows our guys that we can be in the discussion with the top teams, but we have to start getting the results to prove it. It was a start in the right direction."
Â
Memphis (3-7-3, 1-2-2 AAC) plays Cincinnati (7-6-2, 1-2-2 AAC) Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. before travelling to UCF (5-7-1, 1-3-1 AAC) for a match Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
Â
The top four teams in the league standings at the end of the regular season earn the right to host a quarterfinal match in the league tournament. The semifinals and championship match of the conference tournament will be played at USF's Corbett Soccer Stadium in Tampa, Fla.
Â
SMU has a perfect 5-0 record and is in first place in the league, while second-place USF is 4-0-1 and their only blemish is a draw against Memphis. The remaining teams in the league are tightly packed, with Tulsa in third at 2-2-1.
Â
The winner of Wednesday's match between Memphis and Cincinnati will have a leg up in earning a home match in the AAC quarterfinals. UConn and UCF are tied with 1-3-1 records, while Temple is eighth at 1-4.
Â
Memphis sophomore Jake Leeker was named the conference's goalkeeper of the week for the second time this season. He made six saves in last week's win over Georgia State and recorded six more in the double overtime draw with USF.
Â
Junior Raul Gonzalez upped his team-leading goal total to six in the Georgia State win. He is the only Memphis player with multiple goals this season.
Â
Following the road trip, the Tigers will return to Mike Rose Soccer Complex for the regular-season finale against Tulsa, Saturday, October 31.
