Women’s Tennis Wraps Up Day One at Purdue

Berres and Hughes to consolation semifinals in doubles.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The University of Memphis women's tennis team advanced one doubles entry to the consolation semifinals on day one of the Purdue Invitational, Friday.
The team of Kathryn Hughes and Janina Berres dropped their opening round match, 6-4, to Louisville's team of Suswam and Boesing, but bounced back with a 6-3 win over the Miami (Ohio) team of Rodriguez and Struble to advance to a Saturday semifinal against another Miami (Ohio) pairing, facing the team of Shteyn and Shapovalova at 9 a.m., Saturday.
In singles play, play moved indoors and all tree Lady Tigers entries will both move to the consolation draw. Hughes lost to Mississippi State's Anastasia Rentouli, 7-5, 6-2, while Berres fell to Purdue's Nikki Robinson, 0-6, 6-4, 6-3. Tara McElroy lost to Iowa's Adorabol Huckleby, 6-3, 6-2 in the Boilermaker Special Draw.
Singles play will continue Saturday for the Tigers. The remainder of the Memphis roster will also be in action Saturday in the opening round of the ITA All-American prequalifying draw in California.
