Tigers Rifle Defeats Army

No. 6 Memphis posts a 4656-4642 win over the No. 13 Cadets.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis newcomers Jack Berhorst and Leighton Dempster both set personal bests in leading the No. 6 nationally-ranked Tigers squad to a 4656-4642 win over No. 13 Army late Sunday.
Memphis won both team disciplines. The Tigers edged out the Cadets 2311-2309 in smallbore and recorded a 2345-2333 win in air rifle.
Senior Beth Lee placed first in both individual aggregate score and air rifle. She had an aggregate score of 1165 and posted a 589 in air rifle. Junior Amy Fister tied for second in the match with an aggregate score of 1162 (579-583). Fister tied Army's top shooter, Nathan Brewer, at 1162.
Berhorst, a junior transfer from Murray State, won smallbore with a personal-best 582, finishing just ahead of Fister's 579 score. Berhorst's aggregate score of 1155 also was a career high.
Dempster, a freshman, shot a personal-best 588 in air rifle and tied for second in the discipline, placing only behind Lee (589). Dempster also recorded a career-high aggregate score of 1158, which was sixth overall in the match.
Sophomore Haylea Broughton had the Tigers' third-highest aggregate score (1159) and placed fifth overall. Her 585 air rifle score was fifth in that discipline.
Memphis returns to action Saturday, Oct. 24 when it travels to Fort Worth, Texas, to face No. 8 Nebraska in a neutral-site match.
