MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis rifle team returns to action this Sunday, Oct. 18 when it hosts Army in a Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) match.
The Tigers are No. 6 in this week's Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, and Army is No. 13. Memphis head coach Butch Woolbright, though, points out there is very little separation in the middle of the national rankings.
"Our team has seen the rankings, but we also know there are only 10 points that separates the No. 6 team from the No. 14 team," said Woolbright. "This is probably the closest the ranked teams have been from top-to-bottom. There's just not much difference. The rankings are going to change week-to-week depending on how teams perform.
"I feel good about our match Sunday. Despite having fall break earlier this week, we got in a few solid practices since our last match. I'm pleased with what I'm seeing from the team."
Woolbright had a lot to like after his team's two strong performances to open the 2015-16 season in late September/early October.
Memphis posted a program-best score for a season opener at the Ole Miss Open Sept. 30. The Tigers' 4668 aggregate score earned the squad a third-place finish at the Ole Miss Open. In addition, four shooters set seven personal bests at the Ole Miss. Memphis followed its Ole Miss Open performance with a second-place showing at the Tiger Open Oct. 4.
In last season's match versus Army, the Cadets edged out Memphis 4632-4626. Elizabeth Lee won the air rifle discipline (593), and Amy Fister took first in smallbore (582) in last year's encounter with Army.
