Berres and Paul Advance to Main Draw

Duo to start main draw play at 8 a.m., Friday.

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. – Freshman Janina Berres and junior Gabrielle Paul won their way to the main doubles draw on the opening day of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional held at Purdue University, Thursday. The Lady Tiger tandem picked up a pair of doubles victories to become one of four entries to move on from the 16 team qualifying draw.

For their effort, Berres and Paul will open the main draw of doubles against the top seed of Mami Adachi and Aldila Sufjiadi, Friday, at 8 a.m. That meeting will be the first opportunity for the duo to pick up a win over a seeded opponent in Paul's first weekend of play this fall.

The duo opened the morning with an 8-4 win over the Eastern Kentucky team of Margaux Lacroix and Marina Marti. They then rolled through the No. 3 seeded team of Marta Burgos and Claudia Esribens of host Purdue, 8-1, to advance to Friday morning play.

Following doubles play, the Lady Tigers were joined by teammate Hanna Sohn in the qualifying singles draw.

Facing the top seed in that draw, Paul fell to East Tennessee State's Marina Guinart, 6-3, 6-4, while Berres fell to another seeded player, falling to No. 3 seeded Tiffany Tavares of Tennessee, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Sohn won her opening set 6-2, then Evansville's Marine Darzyan evened the match with a 6-4 second set victory. Sohn came back and advanced to the Round of 16 with a 6-2 third set win. But there, another seeded opponent stood in the way and No. 4 seede Natalie Davila of host Purdue won 6-4, 6-2 to prevent any of the three Memphis singles entries from advancing out of the qualifying draw.

Main draw play begins in both doubles and singles on Friday. Berres and Paul will play their 8 a.m. match and teammates Kathryn Hughes and Marta Morga will also take to the court for an 8 a.m. match, facing Middle Tennessee's Brittany Huxley and Sarah Sediri. The winners advance to a 9:30 Round of 16 doubles match before doubles wraps up for the day.

At 8:45 a.m., Memphis' seeded team of Hanna Sohn and Anki Wind will start their ITA Regional run, facing Miami (Ohio)'s team of Anzhelika Shapovalova and Anastasia Vasiukhina. The winner of that match advances to a 10:15 a.m. Round of 16 match.

After the two rounds of doubles, the field will play one round of singles.

Hughes will start her ITA run against Wright State's Lindsey Verstrepen at 1:30 p.m., while No. 9 seeded Wind starts against Tennessee's Brittany Lindl at 2:45 p.m. Marta Morga will take to the singles courts at 2:30, facing Louisville's Elle Stokes to round out the Lady Tigers' main draw singles entries.
