Memphis Rebounds with 2-1 Win over Georgia State
Oct 13, 2015 | Men's Soccer
Hector Cantele and Raul Gonzalez both scored in the win
Memphis rallied from a 1-0 deficit to pick up a 2-1 win over Georgia State in the final nonconference match of the season Tuesday night at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Tigers (3-7-2, 1-3-1 AAC) fired off 16 shots and forced 10 saves out of the Panthers' goalkeeper.
"At the end of the day we got the win and it's important confidence wise going into the USF match," Memphis head coach Richard Mulrooney said. "Georgia State is a solid team and I'm glad we didn't play another minute. We were creating some opportunities tonight and seeing that gives me hope we can score more goals."
Kenneth Kauker nearly gave Memphis a dream start when blasted a long-range shot that hit off of the cross bar in the second minute. Moments later, GSU's goalkeeper Greyson Walldorff came up big with a double save to deny shots from Hector Cantele and Chandler Klemm.
Despite the Tigers coming out firing on all cylinders, Georgia State jumped in front in the 26th minute on a goal from Max Hemmings.
Cantele, fully healthy and starting for the first time since September 22 against Louisville, scored his first goal of the season to tie the match up just before halftime. Raul Gonzalez set up the goal when he fired an initial shot that was saved, allowing Cantele to score on the rebound.
With the match tied at halftime, Memphis again started strong and was rewarded with a goal in the 58th minute. Gonzalez made a long, winding run and scored on a long-range shot.
The Memphis defense would hold on the rest of the way to deliver the win. Georgia State, who averages nearly three goals a match, applied plenty of pressure late but the Tigers were up to the challenge.
"I thought Jake did well and they are a tough team to defend. To only give up a goal against them, I'm pleased with. This shows that we can win the tight games," Mulrooney said.
Memphis will hope to take the momentum from this win into Friday's conference match against league-leading USF at 7:00 p.m. at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
