Senior on watch list for most outstanding collegiate tight end
University of Memphis tight end Alan Cross has been included on the 2015 John Mackey Award Midseason Watch List announced on Wednesday.
Given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, this year's John Mackey Award race has been summed up as the most "wide open" since the award's inception. The award recipient is selected by a vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the recipient will be announced on Dec. 9, and then presented live on Dec. 10, 2015 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU.
Other key dates include the announcement of the 2015 Mackey Semi-Finalists on Nov. 16 and the 2015 Mackey Finalists on Nov. 24. Future announcements can be found at www.johnmackeyaward.com.
Cross has caught nine passes for 87 yards and a touchdown in 2015. He has been a significant contributor to the Tigers' offensive success as the team heads into Saturday's game against Ole Miss averaging 47.8 points per game (4th in FBS) and 541.2 yards of total offense (8th in FBS). Memphis is 5-0 and has won an unprecedented 12 games dating back to 2014.
Over his four-year career, Cross has caught 74 passes for 908 yards and a Memphis tight end-record 12 touchdowns. The Millington native and former walk-on has played in 41 games, starting 36 contests. He has already earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Memphis.
NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA.
