WKU event first of three in as many weeks
Three weeks removed from opening the fall season with a team championship at the Memphis Intercollegiate, the UofM men's golf team returns to action this week, playing in the WKU Kenny Perry Invitational at The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Ky.
Â
The 11-team, 54-hole tournament starts Monday at Olde Stone with the first 36 holes scheduled to be played. The tournament concludes on Tuesday with the final 18-hole round.
Â
Memphis' tournament field for Olde Stone includes senior Thomas Perrot and junior Lars van Meijel, who finished second and third, respectively, at the Memphis Intercollegiate. Rounding out the Tigers' five-player team is Taylor McCullum, Sydney Chung and Kevin Lee. JC Campbell will play for the Tigers as an individual.
Â
"We had some very competitive qualifying tournaments since our last event at Colonial and had one change in the lineup with Kevin Lee earning a spot," said Memphis' second-year coach Blake Smart. "This is a very experienced lineup and I am excited to see us keep the momentum we gained from an early victory."
Â
The Club at Olde Stone, designed by internationally acclaimed architect Arthur Hills, features Zeon Zoysia fairways and bentgrass greens. The par 72, 7,400 yard course is dotted with 99 bunkers.
Â
The course is woven into the landscape which features rolling hills, flatlands, trees, native grasses and water. Olde Stone features a vertical change of over 160 feet between the highest and lowest points on the property. Water hazards come into play on five holes.
Â
"The Club at Olde Stone is a fantastic venue and has hosted a few NCAA Regionals and a Southern Amateur," Smart said. "It will test every aspect of your game, but mostly strategy and patience. It is important for us to have a productive practice round and establish a good game plan."
Â
The Tigers will see the course for the first time on Sunday with an afternoon practice round slated.
Â
Following this week's event, Memphis' fall season continues the next two weeks at the Pinetree Intercollegiate in Kennesa, Ga., and the Quail Valley Collegiate in Vero Beach, Fla.
