Lady Tigers Fall to No. 11 Commodores
Jan 31, 2015 | Women's Tennis
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The 58th-ranked University of Memphis women’s tennis team came up short to 11th-ranked Vanderbilt, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Currey Tennis Center in Nashville. The Lady Tigers fall to 2-2 on the season while the Commodores remain unbeaten at 3-0.
“I give a lot of credit to Vanderbilt today,” first-year Head Coach Hayden Perez said. “They are a tough team that came out and asserted themselves in doubles and took control of the doubles point. In singles, the girls competed very well and we found ourselves in a position to win some tough matches. Vanderbilt proved to be too good today, but we grew as a program."
For the third-consecutive match, Memphis failed to claim the doubles point, losing on all three courts. Vanderbilt’s duo of Frances Altick and Astra Sharma knocked off Memphis’ team of Kathryn Hughes and Tara McElroy, 6-1, at the No. 3 line before Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares defeated the Tigers’ pair of Marta Morga and Liza Tymchenko, 6-2, at the No. 2 position to secure the point. The Blue and Gray’s No. 1 team of Anki Wind and Alyssa Hibberd suffered their first setback of the season as they fell to Vanderbilt’s 32nd-ranked tandem of Sydney Campbell and Courtney Colton, 6-4.
The Commodores continued to roll in singles, winning all six first sets en-route to the sweep. Hibberd lost in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) to Sharma at the No. 4 line and Hughes was unable to upset 77th-ranked Casares (6-2, 6-3) at the No. 5 line to put Vanderbilt a point away from clinching. Morga tumbled in a pair of tightly contested 6-4 sets to Altick at the No. 3 line to secure the team win for Vanderbilt. The lead increased to 5-0 after Hughes withdrew from her match after falling behind a set.
A pair of bright points for the Tigers came when Wind and Tymchenko each rallied to force a third set despite dropping the first. Wind, of Dinslaken, Germany, pushed 15th-ranked Campbell to the limit in the third set, but came up just short (6-1, 3-6, 6-3) while Tymchenko split the first two sets and lost 10-6 in the shortened tiebreaker.
Memphis returns to the Bluff City for a pair of double-headers next weekend on Friday and Sunday at the Eldon Roark Tennis Center and the University Club. Visit GoTigersGo.com and follow @UofMTennis on Twitter for all the latest news on the women’s tennis team.
