Memphis Coasts Past Houston in 62-44 Win

HOUSTON (AP) Austin Nichols scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked four shots to lead Memphis to a 62-44 win over Houston on Sunday.
Markel Crawford added 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting and Kedren Johnson had 10 points to help Memphis (9-6, 2-2 American Athletic Conference) snap a two-game skid.
Leading by six at the break, the Tigers broke it open early in the second half by pouring in 13 unanswered points, including a dunk from Shaq Goodwin to ignite the run, to make it 48-30 with 9:11 to go. They continued to pull away down the stretch.
Memphis held Houston (7-8, 0-4) to just 33 percent shooting on 48 attempts from the floor. The Tigers hit 23 of 53 from the field and edged the Cougars at the foul line, 12-8, in made free throws.
Memphis held Houston to 44 points. It is the Cougars fewest points in a game with Memphis in the 43-game series. The previous fewest points by Houston were 48 in a 64-48 loss in 2003-04 (Jan. 24, 2004).
The last time a Tigers' opponent netted fewer than 44 points was the 2010-11 season opener. Memphis defeated Centenary 104-40 in that game on Nov. 12, 2010.
Jherrod Stiggers made three 3-pointers and had 13 points for Houston.
Memphis returns home and opens a two-game homestand Thursday, Jan. 15 against longtime rival Cincinnati. Game time is 6 p.m. (CT) at FedExForum. ESPN is televising Thursday's match-up.
