Lady Tigers Fall at Home to Vanderbilt
Aug 31, 2014 | Women's Soccer
Aug. 31, 2014 Memphis, Tenn. - A spirited comeback attempt from the Lady Tigers falls just short as Memphis loses to Vanderbilt 2-1 at Mike Rose Soccer Complex on Sunday night.
The Lady Tigers (1-1-1) looked the more dangerous team early on, but it was Vanderbilt who got the on the board first thanks to a Colby Ciarrocca goal in the 18th minute. Ciarrocca blocked an attempted clearance from Maryse Bard-Martel and then put the ball in the unattended net.
The Lady Tiger defense was breached again 13 minutes later when Ciarrocca dribbled at the top right of the box and fired across her body to beat Bard-Martel just inside the far post and make it 2-0.
Memphis had its fair share of chances but were unable to beat Vanderbilt's (3-1) Christiana Ogunsami. The best chance came in the 42nd minute when a Valerie Sanderson backheel freed Emily Adamic, but her shot was just wide of the post. Two minutes later Sanderson found Adamic behind the defense again, but Ogunsami got down quick enough to stop Adamic's low shot.
At the half, the Lady Tigers had outshot the Commodores 7-3, but trailed on the scoreboard 0-2.
Neither team had many great chances at the beginning of the second, but in the 60th Vanderbilt hit the post.
Finally Memphis broke through in the 66th minute when Kaitlyn Atkins, making her first appearance of the season, played a beautiful curling ball to the back post where Sanderson met it with a diving header to make it 2-1.
The assist from Atkins brings her 28 for her career, four within tying the school record. Sanderson's goal was her third of the season.
Memphis earned a few more corners, but were unable to find a way to equalize the score. In the 87th minute, Vanderbilt hit the underside of the crossbar, but the Lady Tigers escaped with no more damage done.
This weekend the Lady Tigers travel to Oxford, Miss. to play Auburn and Ole Miss in the Rebel Classic.
