CINCINNATI – Memphis struck out looking four times and left six runners in scoring position to fall 8-5 in the series finale at Marge Schott Stadium against Cincinnati on Sunday.
Cincinnati (22-27, 6-15 American) jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Bryce Beeler in the first inning. Beeler made his first start and was roughed up for four runs on four hits in the first. Beeler came back to strikeout two in the inning to limit the damage to four runs.
The Bearcats used a two-run home run in the second to lead 6-0, but the Tigers (26-26, 7-14 American) put two runs on the board in the fourth to attempt to climb back in the game. A leadoff single and error had Carter White standing on second with no outs and Beeler was hit by a pitch to put two on with no outs. A fielder’s choice loaded the bases as Beeler beat the throw to second and a fielder’s choice by Keaton Aldridge made it 6-1. Zach Schritenthal followed with a RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-2, but the Tigers left two runners stranded to end the frame.
Cincinnati answered with two runs, coming off a two-run home run, to regain the six run lead at 8-2. Memphis scored twice in the sixth to cut it back to four runs at 8-4. With the bases loaded and no outs, Schritenthal grounded out to third for the RBI and Darien Tubbs followed with a sacrifice fly. The Tigers stranded a runner on third to end the frame, but clawed back to 8-4.
Memphis continued to chip away in the seventh with Kane Barrow setting the table with a double. A one-out single by Carter White drove in Barrow to make it 8-5, but the Tigers weren’t done there. Beeler was hit by a pitch and Ethan Gross followed with an infield single to load the bases. Cincinnati induced a double play to end the threat as Memphis left two runners on in the inning.
Barrow and White led the Memphis offense with two hits each. Beeler (2-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing six runs on five hits in one inning of work.
Memphis begins a four-game homestand to close the regular season on Tuesday against UT Martin at FedExPark. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
