Box Score
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Central Arkansas got a two-out single in the 17th inning and scored three runs in the inning to outlast Memphis 4-2 on Friday at FedExPark.
Central Arkansas (7-4) got the 17th inning rally started with the leadoff man being hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt and groundout put the go-ahead run at third with two outs. A walk put runners on the corners and Justin Treece singled to leftfield to plate the go-ahead run. A throwing error on a chopper in front of the plate allowed one run to score and a passed ball brought in another.
The Tigers were able to get one run in the bottom of the inning, but the Bears held on for the 4-2 victory. A leadoff bunt single by Jake Little got the inning started and Drew Griffin doubled off the leftfield wall to put two runners in scoring position. A sacrifice fly by Bryce Beeler pushed the scored to 4-2, but a groundout ended the game.
Central Arkansas (7-4) benefited from an early Tiger error to take a 1-0 lead. A fly ball to leftfield was dropped for a two-base error and the Bears used a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly to drive in the run.
The Tigers (11-2) evened the score at 1-1 in the third, but a double play turned by Central Arkansas eliminated any chance of a big inning. The top of the order in Darien Tubbs, Zach Willis and Little produced three-straight hits to start the inning, and Little's single scored Tubbs to tie the game. A double play and pop out ended up stranding a runner on third and the game remained tied at 1-1.
Reed didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning when an infield single took away the no-hit bid. After a one out error, the Bears put two on with one out to threaten to take the lead. Reed struck out the next hitter and induced a ground ball to end the threat. Reed finished the night having thrown 103 pitches over 8.2 innings, striking out a career high seven hitters while walking just one and allowing two hits.
After Reed allowed a two-out hit he was lifted for reliever Blake Myers. A two-out walk put two runners on with two outs, but Myers forced a ground ball to send it to the bottom of the ninth tied at 1-1.
The Tigers and Central Arkansas meet for game two of the series at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at FedExPark.
