LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Junior Shaq Goodwin led five Tigers in double figures with a game-high 19 points to lift the University of Memphis men's basketball squad to a 72-62 win over Indiana State in the 2014 Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational third-place game Friday night.
With the win, Memphis evened its record at 2-2. The Sycamores fell to 3-3.
Goodwin netted his 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor and 9-of-12 shooting from the free throw line. The nine free throws made tied a career best. Goodwin also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Other Tigers in double figures were Trahson Burrell (15 points), Avery Woodson (12), Nick King (11) and Austin Nichols (10). Woodson's 12 points all came on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting performance from the three-point arc.
Memphis used a 29-5 run to close the first half and take a 40-22 halftime advantage and continued to build on that early in the second half. The Tigers opened the second half with an 8-4 spurt to increase their lead to 48-26 with 15:33 on the clock. All eight Memphis points came on two King layups, a Goodwin layup and a Burrell tip-in.
But, that's when the Sycamores started chipping away at the Memphis lead. A quick 10-0 Indiana State run over the next three minutes sliced the Tigers' lead to 48-36 with 12:38 left. Brenton Scott accounted for six of the 10 points in the spurt with a three-point play and a trey.
Two Goodwin free throws halted the Sycamores' run and upped the Tigers' advantage to 50-36. Indiana State, though, made one final run. Over the next nine minutes, the Sycamores outscored Memphis 13-6 to cut the lead to 56-49 with 2:19 remaining.
From there, Memphis put the game away at the free throw line, hitting 14-of-16 from the charity stripe in the final 1:53 of the contest.
Friday's first half started like Thursday's game with the Sycamores taking an early 6-0 lead. Memphis bounced back with a 10-3 spurt to take a 10-9 lead on a Burrell three-pointer.
Indiana State regained the lead and had a 17-11 advantage with 11:54 left in the opening half, but then Memphis took control. A 14-0 Tigers' run gave Memphis a 25-17 advantage at the 5:19 mark. After two quick Indiana State baskets made it 25-21, the Tigers went on a 12-0 spurt to take a commanding 37-21 lead with :28 left.
A Scott free throw with :04 left cut the Memphis lead to 37-22, but just before the halftime buzzer, Woodson nailed his fourth trey of the first half to give the Tigers a 40-22 advantage.
Scott led the Sycamores with 12 points, and Khristian Smith added 10 points for Indiana State. Smith pulled down a team-high six boards.
Memphis shot 46.2 percent from the floor, 41.7 percent from the arc and 79.2 percent from the charity stripe. The Tigers defense held Indiana State to 32.7 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from the arc. Memphis out-rebounded the Sycamores 40-27.
The Tigers return to action Tuesday, Dec. 2 when they host Stephen F. Austin at FedExForum. The game, to be aired on ESPNews, is slated for a 6 p.m. (CT) tip. The contest is the final one for Memphis in the 2014 Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational.
