MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis fell in overtime to Christian Brothers 74-70 in its only exhibition on Wednesday night at FedExForum.
Junior forward Shaq Goodwin got the Tigers on the board first with a jumper from just inside the three-point line. Next trip down he would score and was fouled, completing the and-one to make it 5-0. Goodwin scored 11 of the Tigers first 15 points. He'd finish with an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Sophomore forward Austin Nichols followed Goodwin with 17 points and five rebounds.
After a fast start, the Tigers cooled off and were unable to get into a prolonged rhythm.
At the break, CBU led the Tigers 32-31. Memphis shot 39.4 percent, while Christian Brothers hit 14 of its 29 attempts for 48.3 percent.
The second half started with the teams trading baskets, before Memphis took the lead back 44-43 with 11:37 remaining. The UofM would push the lead to 9 at the 8:12 mark, the biggest lead for either team.
Christian Brothers chipped away and tied the game at 60 with 39 seconds remaining. After a Memphis turnover, CBU's Casey King had an opportunity to win it for the Buccaneers in regulation, but his three-point attempt was off the mark.
The Bucs took an early lead in overtime and held the Tigers at bay until a Nichols jumper tied the game at 67 with just over a minute remaining. CBU responded with a three pointer from Drew HIldreth before pushing its lead to seven. A Nick King three in the final seconds cut the lead to four, and that was as close as it got.
Memphis returns to action Tuesday as it opens the regular season in Sioux Falls, S.D. at the Sanford Pentagon against the Wichita State Shockers. Tip off is at 1 p.m. CT on ESPN.
