With the loss, Memphis fell to 5-4-2 overall and 0-2-1 in league action. The Mustangs improved to 6-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play.
"I mean kudos to SMU," said Head Coach Richard Mulrooney. "They won the game tonight, out right. I would like to say that we had a couple of numbers here or there, but at the end of the day, the result was fair. They beat us fair and square and we have to lick our wounds and get back quickly and get ready for Saturday. It was one of those games where not a lot went right, not because of the way SMU played but we just didn't show up. It was one of those games where we should be disappointed in ourselves, all of us as well as staff and players and we need to find a way to regroup and get back on Saturday to get a win or at least compete to give us a chance to win, because we didn't do it tonight. It's a sick feeling. Having said that, the season's not over and it's just one game, but it's a game that we need to learn from and hopefully not make the same mistakes or not have that type of performance come Saturday."
Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Tigers offense heated up late in the match. Memphis had eight of its 10 shots in the second half. Memphis' best scoring chances came late in the second half, when Wil Linder received the ball and played it just short of the left side of the net, rolling wide.
In the first half, the Mustangs came out attacking. In the 25th minute, Idrissa Camara played the ball in from 40 yards and brought the ball down the field and shot it from 12 yards out. SMU's second goal came in the 65th minute, when Jared Rice played the ball from the left sideline and with a one-touch from Damian Rosales, scored from six yards out. Rice was credited for assists on both of the Mustangs' goals.
Tigers goal keeper Cody Uzcategui recorded seven saves in the match.
