Memphis Gets Another Conference Tie
Oct 05, 2014 | Women's Soccer
AMBLER,Penn.- Memphis and Temple each scored an early goal in a 1-1 tie at Ambler Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The tie is the second straight for the Lady Tigers (4-5-4, 1-1-2 American Athletic Conference) and the fourth overall.
Sophomore Valerie Sanderson got Memphis on the board first with her seventh goal of the season. In the 11th minute she took a shot from the top of the 18 and hit it off the far left post and in to make it 1-0.
For the second game in a row, Memphis wasn't able to hold onto its lead for long, as Temple responded with a goal less than two minutes later.
Kelly Farrerll received a long pass from Taylor Trusky, and Temple's leading scorer headed it past Maryse Bard-Martel to even the game at 1.
Memphis had a chance to retake the lead in the 22nd minute, when Temple's Taylor Trusky earned a yellow for committing a foul in the box, but Marissa Duguay was unable to convert her penalty kick and the game remained tied.
Five minutes later Temple's Kayla Cunningham would hit the post, which is the closest either team would come to scoring the rest of the half.
Memphis did a good job of attacking the Owls' defense, earning four corners in the first half and forcing two saves out of their three shots. Temple had only one of its four shots end up on target, but it was the one that counted.
Bard-Martel was called into action early in the second period, making a save less than four minutes in. That was the last shot the Lady Tigers would allow in regulation.
The UofM would pepper the Temple goal throughout the rest of the half. The Lady Tigers forced two saves out of their six shots and earned another three corners. But Memphis was unable to find the finishing touch needed to go up a goal, and so for the second time this weekend, the Lady Tigers headed to extra time.
The first overtime started with Memphis earning another corner kick, but the only Lady Tiger shot of the first 10 minutes came in the 99th, when Kaitlyn Atkins fired high.
In the second overtime, Valerie Sanderson forced a save almost seven minutes in, and then Cunningham shot wide for Temple and that was it as the teams left the field deadlocked after 110 minutes.
Memphis finished with an 11-9 shot advantage and 8-0 corner advantage. In goal, Bard-Martel had made three saves, while Temple's Shauni Kerkhoff made five.
Memphis returns home on Thursday to play the Cincinnati Bearcats in another AAC showdown. The action starts at 7 p.m. at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
