MEMPHIS, TENN.- No. 24 Memphis (1-2-0) fell to No. 3 OSU (6-0-0) 3-2 after a two-and-a-half hour lightning delay at Mike Rose Stadium on Sunday.
The first half was a physical test for a young Tigers defense that came under attack early. A foul on Memphis gave OSU an early opportunity to strike. The Cowgirls' Madison Mercado nailed a free kick from just outside the top of the box where Tigers goalkeeper Becca Brown was there for the save to keep the score 0-0 in the 17th-minute.
Following a yellow card in the 28th-minute by Memphis' Marissa Duguay, OSU once again had a free-kick opportunity from the top of the box. Taylor Mathews took the shot for the Cowgirls, but the Tigers' Taylor Eisenhower was there for the block. At the half, the teams headed to the locker-room with the score 0-0.
In the second half, Memphis broke the scoring stalemate when Kaitlyn Atkins played the ball to Taylor Isenhower who then buried a shot from 18-yards to the left side of the net to give Memphis a 1-0 advantage. The assist and goal were the first of the season for the each of the two Tigers.
The Cowgirls netted the equalizer three minutes later off a corner-kick by Taylor Mathews. Mathews served the kick into the box, Makenzie Kahan then headed it in for the score, second goal of the season.
OSU took the lead 2-1 in the 67th-minute on an unassisted goal by Mercado. The freshmen slipped the ball past the Tigers-goal keeper Becca Brown, after Brown left the net in an attempt to clear the ball.
The Tigers evened the score with 12 minutes to play on a penalty-kick by Kylie Davis. OSU's Carson Michalowski fouled Atkins inside the box, Davis then beat the keeper right on the penalty for her first goal of the season.
The Cowgirls nailed the game-winner with six minutes left play, when Mercado fed the ball through the middle to Megan Marchesano, who finished to the back left. Marchesano's game-winner was her fourth goal of the season.
Memphis returns to the pitch Thursday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. (CT) against Vanderbilt on the road in Nashville, Tenn. For more information on the University of Memphis women's soccer program and all Tigers-athletics please visit GoTigersGo.com.
