COLUMBIA, Mo. - Missouri scored four second half goals and topped No. 11/14 Memphis 5-1 on Friday in the season opener for both teams at Walton Stadium.
Missouri snatched the lead in 14th minute with the use of a corner kick. Haley Krentz served the kick from the right side of the pitch and Candace Johnson waited on the far side of the eight yard box. Johnson kicked it in to the back right post to give Missouri the 1-0 lead.
With six freshmen starting and nine of the 11 players on the field listed as underclassmen, Memphis didn't get its first shot off until the sixth minute. Freshman midfielder Madison Oyer had an open look at the net, but her shot sailed wide right. Memphis had another prime opportunity in the half, but Missouri goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein didn't have to make a save on either. In the 38th minute, freshman forward Tine Schryvers served a corner kick into the box where freshman defender Marissa Duguay got a header off, but the header went high.
Memphis out-shot Missouri 6-4 in the first half, but Missouri placed two shots on goal to Memphis' zero. In the final 10 minutes of the first stanza, 10 of 11 players on the field were underclassmen, with seven of which are freshmen.
Missouri grabbed a 2-0 lead just four minutes into the second half as Taiwo Adeshigbin gathered a turnover in the box and rocketed the shot from 15 yards away for the goal. Memphis answered moments later as Schryvers scored her first career goal from about five yards away after an assist from Averi Hallman.
Missouri added three goals in a span of four minutes to open a 5-1 lead. Adeshigbin provided her second goal of the night and Marissa Diggs followed with two goals of her own and Missouri notched the 5-1 lead.
With the loss, Memphis' eight-game win streak against SEC foes comes to an end. Memphis had outscored SEC opponents 18-3 in that span. Missouri's win also snaps a 17-game unbeaten streak that Memphis had in August games. Missouri also ended Memphis' eight-game win streak in season openers.
Memphis has a two week break for its next match, Aug. 31 against Arkansas State. The home opener is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
